The communications company OneWeb, has entered into an agreement with a consortium led by HMG (through the UK Secretary of State for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy) and India based Bharti Global Limited for the acquisition of the OneWeb business.
- The consortium brings immediate commercial value to OneWeb. Bharti, through Bharti Airtel, is the third largest mobile operator in the world, with over 425 million customers.
- Bharti Airtel has its own extensive mobile broadband networks and enterprise business, which will act as the testing ground for all OneWeb products, services, and applications.
- The commitment of HMG accelerates and enhances OneWebs global access. OneWeb will contribute to the UK governments ambition to join the first rank of space nations, along with its commitment to making the UK the worlds leader in science and research and development.
In July 2020: The leading private equity firm Carlyle Group announced that its affiliated entity Comfort Investments II will invest $235 million in Nxtra Data Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Bharti Airtel, engaged in the data centre business.
In May 2020: Bharti Airtel announced that it has acquired a strategic stake in Voicezen, an early stage startup focused on conversational AI technologies.
The deal helps Airtel to have preferred access to Voicezens technologies, which can be deployed across its customer touch points in multiple languages.
In May 2020, Bharti Airtel has selected IBM and Red Hat to build its new telco network cloud, designed to make it more efficient, flexible and future-ready to support core operations and enable new digital services. Under the agreement, Airtel will build its next generation core network, analytical tools and new consumer and enterprise services on top of this cloud platform based on open standards.
