The leading financial technology company Mastercard, announced to invest $100 million in Airtel Mobile Commerce BV(AMC BV), a wholly owned subsidiary of Airtel Africa plc. After completion of the transaction Mastercard will hold a minority stake in AMC BV, and Airtel Africa continuing to hold the majority stake.

  • AMC BV is currently the holding company for several of Airtel Africa’s mobile money operations and is intended to own and operate the mobile money businesses across all of Airtel Africa’s fourteen operating countries.
  • Airtel Africa, a leading provider of telecom and mobile money services, with a presence in 14 countries across Africa.
  • Alongside the investment, the Group and Mastercard have extended commercial agreements and signed a new commercial framework which will deepen their partnerships across numerous geographies and areas including card issuance, payment gateway, payment processing, merchant acceptance and remittance solutions, amongst others.

The prominent deals and acquisitions by Airtel are mentioned below:

Feb 2021: The global private equity firm Warburg Pincus, announced that India based Bharti Airtel will acquire 20% equity stake in its DTH arm Bharti Telemedia for approximately USD 426 million. The proposed deal helps Airtel to gain full control and ownership over Bharti Telemedia.

July 2020: The communications company OneWeb, had entered into an agreement with a consortium led by HMG (through the UK Secretary of State for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy) and India based Bharti Global Limited for the acquisition of the OneWeb business.

July 2020: The leading private equity firm Carlyle Group announced that its affiliated entity Comfort Investments II invest $235 million in Nxtra Data Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Bharti Airtel, engaged in the data centre business.

May 2020: Bharti Airtel announced that it had acquired a strategic stake in Voicezen, an early stage startup focused on conversational AI technologies.
The deal helps Airtel to have preferred access to Voicezen’s technologies, which can be deployed across its customer touch points in multiple languages.

May 2020: Bharti Airtel had selected IBM and Red Hat to build its new telco network cloud, designed to make it more efficient, flexible and future-ready to support core operations and enable new digital services. Under the agreement, Airtel would build its next generation core network, analytical tools and new consumer and enterprise services on top of this cloud platform based on open standards.

January 2020: Bharti Airtel, India’s largest integrated telecommunications services provider, and Google Cloud announced a partnership to serve the evolving needs of millions of Indian businesses in a rapidly digitizing economy.
