In order to boost circular economy, Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. announced its plans to start work with IBM Japan, Ltd. They will work together on a resource circulation platform that utilizes blockchain technology
- The aim through this is to ensure the traceability of materials a hurdle to clear on the way to achieving a circular economy.
- With the resource circulation platform being planned by Mitsui Chemicals and IBM Japan, the aim is to ensure traceability throughout the resource life cycle, from raw materials like monomers and polymers through to the manufacturing, sales and use of products.
- This aim applies also to the recycling process thereafter, in which used products are recovered, dismantled, shredded and sorted into raw materials that can be reused to manufacture new products.

Oct 2020: The global coating and chemical manufacturer Mitsui Chemicals announced that its subsidary SDC Technologies, Inc. had acquired COTEC GmbH, a leading manufacture, sale and researcher of hydrophobic and anti-reflective coatings.
July 2020: In effort to limit novel coronavirus infection the Mitsui Chemicals announced that its wholly owned subsidiary Sunrex Industry Co. Ltd. to expand its production facilities for TEKNOROTE mask nose clamps.
May 2020: Mitsui Chemicals, had begun working on the development of a new, reusable 3D-printed mask with Nagoya University and a spinoff venture from Nagoya University. The new masks key feature is the fact that it not only filters out viral particles but also can be reused.
March 2020: Mitsui Chemicals, had expanded its production facilities for meltblown nonwovens at wholly owned subsidiary Sunrex Industry Co., Ltd., starting operations at the new facilities here this January. The move comes as an effort to respond to growing demand for industrial-use meltblown nonwovens, and will increase the Mitsui Chemicals Groups overall production capacity for these materials by 50 percent.
August 2019: Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. announced that it has entered into a materials sector-based partnership agreement with Plug and Play, LLC (Founder & CEO: Saeed Amidi), a Silicon Valley-based firm that supports the growth of startups with innovative technologies and ideas.
