Sharp Corporation signed a joint development agreement with Nikon Corporation to accelerate innovation in the implementation technology of biomimetics.
- This agreement enables the combination of Sharp’s knowledge of Nature Technology, used in its home appliances, and Nikon’s high-precision microfabrication technology to create parts that have surface shape with new performance features such as antifouling, water repellency, and reduced drag, with the aim of adding functionality to a wide variety of products.
- Nikon and Sharp verified the propeller fan of the air conditioner outdoor units had a certain energy-saving by applying Riblet processing through a joint experiment.
- Both companies continue joint development aiming at putting Biomimetics technology into practical use in 2023.

April 2021: To open new opportunity in aerospace, space and defence segments, Nikon Corporation has acquired majority ownership of Morf3D Inc. El Segundo, CA based Morf3D is a leader in metal additive manufacturing (AM) specializing in AM and engineering for the aerospace, space and defense industries.
Feb 2020: Nikon Corporation (Nikon) signed a capital and business alliance agreement with XTIA Ltd. (previous company name: Optical Comb, Inc.) Based on this agreement, Nikon will accept a 0.8 billion yen third-party allocation of shares by XTIA.
July 2019: Nikon Corporation agreed on the expansion of partnership between HEALIOS K.K. based on the business and capital alliance agreement concluded in 2017. Based on this agreement, Nikon will accept 4 billion yen of series 2 unsecured convertible bonds with stock acquisition rights through a third-party allocation by Healios, and expand the business partnership.
June 2019: Nikon Corporation had invested USD $7.5 million in wrnch, Inc., a computer vision and deep learning startup. Established in 2014, wrnch uses deep learning to develop and provide tools and software development kits (SDKs) that enable computers to see and understand human movement and activity.
June 2019: Nikon Corporation and its subsidiary Nikon Instruments Inc. had established the Nikon BioImaging Lab in Boston, USA to provide contract imaging and assay services for pharmaceutical companies and venture companies involved in drug discovery, and to provide product demonstrations.
April 2019: Nikon Corporation had entered into a manufacturing agreement with Velodyne Lidar, Inc., the leading developer and manufacturer of lidar (light detection and ranging) sensors, which are a core technology in autonomous driving. Sendai Nikon Corporation, a Nikon subsidiary, will manufacture lidar sensors for Velodyne and plans to start mass production.
