Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest maker of NAND flash memory chips will increase investment at its chip plant in China by $8 billion to increase the production of NAND flash memory chips. The company had announced that it would invest $7 billion over three years in its Xi’an plant in Shaanxi Province to produces NAND flash memory chips in 2017. Samsung’s NAND flash memory chips can hold data permanently and are used in mobile devices, memory cards, USB flash drives, and solid-state drives.

Considering that artificial intelligence (AI) has arisen as a leading global future technology trend, Samsung is planning to expand its AI segment. The company currently maintains seven AI centers in the U.K. (Cambridge), South Korea (Seoul), the U.S. (Silicon Valley and New York), Russia (Moscow), and Canada (Toronto and Montreal).

Samsung Electronics is the world’s largest maker of smartphones, and the company ranks second in worldwide applications of 5G patents. Samsung has made approximately 2,800 5G patent applications to global organizations

  • April 2019: Samsung Electronics announced that it would invest around $116 million by 2030 to strengthen its competitiveness in System LSI and Foundry businesses. The new investment would help the company to become a leader in logic chips by 2030. Samsung will create approximately 15,000 jobs in R&D.
  • November 2018: Samsung Electronics announced that it joined the Partnership on Artificial Intelligence to Benefit People and Society (PAI). The Partnership was established to discuss, study, and formulate best practices on AI technologies with more than 70 global organizations across academia, civil society, and industry.
  • May 2018: Samsung Electronics announced the opening of an artificial intelligence (AI) Center in Russia. The AI Center’s main research areas will be computer vision and fundamental algorithms for AI platforms, such as robotics, intelligent driving assistance, and all future projects by Samsung
