Tokyo based SoftBank Corp. is a holding corporation that engages in the management of its group companies which provides telecommunication and information technology services. The SoftBank Group was started in 1986 in Japan. At present the group employs approximately 17,000 people across the world. The group is engaged in management of around 102 subsidiaries in broadband, finance, fixed-line telecommunications, e-commerce, internet, technology services, media and marketing, and other businesses.

The major Joint Ventures and Collaborations by Softbank are mentioned below:

February 2020: SoftBank’s investment vehicle Softbank Vision Fund is investing $100 million in UK based AI start-up Behavox to monitor employees’ behaviour at financial services companies. This investment would be organized from SoftBank’s Vision Fund II. The AI start-up Behavox uses AI to detect nefarious activity by employees, such as rogue trading or bribery. With this investment Softbank is taking a different path with Vision Fund II, targeting more modest investments in functional businesses offering vital services to particular industries, and avoiding high-profile and potentially overvalued companies.

October 2019: SoftBank Corp., TBCASoft and IBM announced their collaboration to support the transformation of the telecommunications industry that is intended to use cross-carrier blockchain technology designed to enable new synergies throughout the industry, provide new services to telecom carriers and their subscribers, and foster innovative business models.

July 2019: SoftBank Corp with Didi Chuxing established a joint venture DiDi Mobility Japan Corp. to offer next-generation taxi-hailing services in Japan. The new joint venture will deploy DiDi’s world’s most advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytic technologies on its open taxi platform. DiDi Japan will begin pilot operations free of service charge to taxi companies in autumn from Osaka, expanding to Okinawa, Kyoto, Fukuoka, Tokyo and other major cities gradually.

April 2019: SoftBank Corp. and SoftBank Vision Fund announced a joint venture with OYO Hotels & Homes, the world’s 6th largest hotel chain that operates hotels, homes & living spaces. OYO commence its hotel operations in Japan, through newly formed joint venture OYO Hotels Japan G.K.

March 2019: SoftBank Corp. announced collaboration with Taiwan telecommunications carrier Chunghwa Telecom Co., in artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of things (IoT) and other related fields through technological and commercial cooperation to develop best use cases for future smart cities in Taiwan.
